2. Do not underestimate the barcode on the boarding pass

Even if you hide your name and the reservation code does not mean you getting safe. All the reservation information is embedded in the barcode on the boarding pass. it’s not just the airline can access and got this barcode information, everyone in anywhere where able to connect internet can access it. With the image of your boarding pass, anyone can upload it to the barcode reader sites and grab all the information from there.

No one really knows what they’ll do with your information. What if the bad guys use this information to steal your identity and use it for the illegal purposes? Therefore, You better not to post your boarding pass image on social networks, even if you have already hidden the name and reservation code.

When you post the air tickets’ image on social networks without hiding the bar code, bad guys can easily install the barcode app on the phone and scan the image. In these barcodes already embedded all your important information such as name, gender, and ticket code. Some airlines also even embed the flight number into the ticket to help the check-in boarding pass faster, more convenient.

On the Motherboard page, there’s a guy who randomly picks up some boarding pass images’ barcodes on which posted on Instagram. He scanned it to read the information and have full control of a United Airlines account. Why he scanned barcodes? In the barcode includes the booking code and victim’s name, just finding for a little bit and he can get member numbers, combined with the information of victim on Facebook, Instagram, he can reset the account’s password easily (currently this vulnerability has been fixed).

3. Your name, gender: Do not think you have nothing to lose

The name and gender shown on the ticket, when used along with the booking code, may reveal a lot of information about you. On the motherboard page, this guy can use this information to access the website and edit the information such as the passport number or identity card number of the victim. If he got mischief or bad intentions, just replaced victim’s passport number to one of an international criminal, then press enter! The trip of the victim will be delayed and protracted because of trouble with the police and customs of the host country.

And once your passport number or identity card be stolen, bad guys can use it to register the account on bad websites, fake your papers, impersonating you to take criminal activities. And then you have to get in trouble with the authorities. It’s so messy and wastes the time, not to mention and your health and freedom.
