Saigon cuisine is famous for its street food stalls available along the sidewalk. Saigon street food is one of the highlights that attract not only a lot of locals but also tourists. When I arrived in Saigon, I had hunted for the famous street food of this place followed the suggestions of a backpacker friend. And after a Saigon street food tour, I discovered 9 dishes I’m impressed a lot.

1. Bánh Cuốn (Rice Crepe Dumplings)

2. Bánh Khọt (crispy pancakes)

Bánh khọt as a pancake in the thinner version. It’s also made from rice flour but mixed with coconut milk, a little turmeric powder to get yellow, the cake molds are small circles, quite similar to khanom krok’s cake molds (small coconut cake of Thailand). Adding flours, shrimps, chopped onions above the cake when the crust turns to yellow and got crispy.

3. Bánh tráng trộn (rice paper mixture)

Bánh tráng trộn is a popular and simple snack. This dish is just chopped rice paper, mixed with chili sauce, herbs, quail eggs, squid … This is one of the favorite dishes of Saigon cuisine which attracted a lot of young people, especially students.

4. Bánh xèo

Bánh xèo like a crepe version of Vietnamese but more crispy and as the favorite dish of Vietnam as well as Saigon cuisine. The chef spread a layer of flour on the oil pan, sprinkle some ingredients such as pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, onions. To eat bánh xèo, you have to roll it along with vegetables such as lettuce, lettuce, basil with a little chili then and dipping in sweet-and-sour sauce.

5. Thịt bò nướng lá lốt (Grilled beef in lolot leaf)

This specialty food is one of the must-eat Saigon cuisines you should try. Beef is pureed, seasoned and rolled with lolot leaves, then roasted on a charcoal stove. These stalls where sell this dish usually leave the stove outside, the smoke rising along with the aroma of beef and lolot leaves attracted people. Grilled beef will be eaten with rice paper, raw vegetables, and sauces.

6. Bột chiên (Fried Rice Flour)

In Singapore, Malaysia, this dish is also known as carrot cake, in Thailand is kkanom pak gat and in Saigon, people called bột chiên (fried rice flour), which one of specialty dishes of Saigon cuisine. The main ingredients are rice flour, cassava flour. After kneaded done, flours to be cut into small pieces, fried on the hot pan and reduced the heat slowly. The flour is fried until got crispy, appeared the golden brown on the edges, then added a chicken egg in the middle of the pan and sprinkled little fresh onions.

Porridge is also a popular snack not only in Vietnam but also in many other countries. Porridge is cooked from rice with a lot of water and duck meat … The duck porridge is eaten with duck meat, raw vegetables, and fish sauce.

 8. Gỏi cuốn và chả giò (Fried Spring Rolls)

Gỏi cuốn includes rice paper, vermicelli, minced pork, shrimp and some vegetables. The gỏi cuốn’s fillings are placed neatly in the rice paper, rolled up, and eat with the sauce. For chả giò, after rolled up, each roll would be fried crispy in the oil pan and also eat the same as gỏi cuốn.

Snail dishes are popular in Saigon cuisines, you can find it in the menu of any restaurant or street food stall. The method of processing this dish is also quite diverse such as boiling, baking, frying with chili salt, steamed, curry… Beside the snails, there are clams, oysters are also processed similarly and it also attracts visitors a lot.

How do you feel about my Saigon street food post? Saigon cuisine is a perfect combination of many delicious dishes which originates from many different cultures. It’s mixed the East with the West, between modern and traditional, simple but still attract many people. Although I’m not a person who born in Saigon, during the trips, I suddenly realized that I love this city a lot. I love the simplest things, the street foods are sold here.
