Mekong Delta tour - Nice experiences of a backpacker guy

Mekong Delta tour has brought me many new experiences. A short solo trip only in 3 days, obviously not enough to get full experiences the life of natives and culture of this land. The austere faces, the heartfelt eyes of locals here still follow me up until now. Life here is so peaceful, simple.

On the bus to Can Tho, the capital of Mekong Delta provinces, I had a chat with an elderly native man. His face is austere as the faces of the farmers who lived this land. He said now he was being as the homeless, his wife leaves to follow another guy, take out all of his wealth and children. I just sat and quietly listening to his story, not discussing or thinking about it much, just feel sorry for his situation. I gifted him a bus ticket for the trip as a sympathy of mine. Feeling more relief, I quickly fall fast asleep on the night bus which departs at 0 o’clock.

3 a.m, the bus arrived Can Tho station. What the bus run so fast! I do not think that the trip by bus from Saigon to Can Tho so fast such. I thought that the bus will arrive Can Tho station in the morning, then simply seeking boats to visit Cai Rang floating market. However, the bus arrived Can Tho this early as is it, what am I going to do? At the bus-station, seems there’s no good place to stay, I have to catch motorbike taxi to Ninh Kieu wharf, having coffee and waited until morning. When I arrived any place, the first point is always the sidewalk cafe. Perhaps it is due to the habit of coffee addiction, and also the way to discover the life of the new land completely authentic. In this Mekong Delta tour, the first stop is also a cafe in the Ninh Kieu wharf area.

The life of natives in the Mekong Delta really strenuously, and in Can Tho too. They have to wake up and working, though the morning had not yet come. Just early in the morning, Ninh Kieu wharf had already a lot of boats gathered around in the very bustling air. Some large boats which belong to travel agents waiting for the guests who travel in groups. Some smaller boats which under private ownership waiting for guests who travel under couples, small groups and solo backpacker like me. Initially, I also intended to join the group with other tourists. But while getting around surveying price, there was a boatman woman try to persuade me to take a sightseeing tour by her boat. This woman quite old and has a gentle kind face, so I decided to get in her boat in alone. If comparing the price, it no more expensive than the large boats which for the sightseeing tour in groups.

The boatman woman who has the austere face like many natives here. She has seen me alone at the wharf from early morning, so she proposed I take her boat. Due to this is the first Mekong Delta tour, not know much information so I was a little nervous. However, she still waited for a while to get approved from me. The boat departs while the sky still dark, the sun hasn’t risen yet…

Ninh Kieu wharf that I have only seen on television, where has the boats full of fruit traveling on the river, where has the tangled system of canals, all appears right in front of me. The weather forecast says that it’s very sunny today, but I’m not wearing a hat. Now, the sun is rising out, I take the camera and shooting continually. The riversides, the bridges spanning the Hau River, the bustling activities on the river make me get an indescribable feeling. It seems a nostalgic feeling when remembering of the folk songs of this land which I saw on TV when I was a kid …

The boat approached Cai Rang floating market, the sun glows the glittering sunshine on the horizon, this area very bustling. There’re many boats in large and small sizes, which loaded the full of fruits. A lot of locals screaming up, bargain, ask price in the ebullient atmosphere, they exchange watermelons, coconuts, pineapples, durians of all kinds. Each of the boats only carries only 1-2 types of fruit. The tourist boats get approached closer the boats carrying fruit for guests to choose freely. I did not choose anything, only eat a small breakfast on the shore and watching this lively scene.

I order a bowl of hu tieu (Noodle with seasoned and sauté beef). Due to not eat anything last night so I eat ravenously. In this eatery stall (also called the boat because it is designed as a floating house) also sell fruit, all kinds same as under the boat, guests finished eating the meal can buy fruit here as well. I bought a kilogram of rambutan as snacks along the way, priced cheap only 20k Vnd / kg, on this Mekong Delta tour, I buy rambutan every day to eat freely. I like to stand here, watching locals rowing, trading, the sound of boats collide each other, shouting, asking, bargain, it is difficult to describe.

Scorching pitiless sun, on the boat, still only me and boatmen woman. Perhaps she is used to this weather, so there is no any sign of being tired, even though I feel only a very healthy person able to be able to rowling for hours continuously like this. I asked the woman how long she was doing this work, she tells she has been transporting passengers on the Ninh Kieu wharf for 20 years, every day … Not show of tired, her face always smile, sometimes she shows me places where the boat had passed, includes the bridges, riversides.

In addition to the floating market, the boat also took me to some places, such as ecological zone and gardens. The general feeling is that the ecological zone is quite cool, with orchards, dog racing zone, and crocodile breeding grounds. The crocodiles here are raised and then take skin to make products such as bags, purses, and belts which sell in the ecological zone. Due to this is a tourist resort, so it also owns images of traditional culture such as girls wearing ao ba ba, the lifestyle like a real Mekong Delta girl, sitting by the well and shampooing, tenderly and charmingly. In the garden, I do not know whether I arrive the right place or not but the fruit here is not very much. Only some fruits, such as mangosteen is so small, difficult to eat, jackfruit, coconut is also little. However, the weather very cool despite the sunny outside to 35-40 degrees Celsius.

I stayed in Can Tho for a few days, booking in a small hotel room to stay. This Kim Lan hotel is quite near Ninh Kieu wharf, simple clean, balcony overlooking the Can Tho Bridge. When I free, I rent a motorcycle right on the hotel, running around the city of Can Tho, exploring the life and culture of the people here. The city center is very crowded, as bustle as other cities. Sightseeing on Can Tho bridge, eat barbecues at beneath the bridge is very tasty.

In the morning, there is a dish that I like very much is bun thit nuong (rice noodles with grilled meat). The dish which includes pieces of meats is of all sizes, from small as sausage to big sizes as grilled meat in Hanoi. A strange thing for me is that in the morning, locals here all eat rice. Dishes of rice are sold in street stalls, in restaurants with full of dishes. I prefer to eating soup dishes, so it’s a bit hard to eat rice in the morning.

In the evening, around Ninh Kieu Wharf is very bustling, seems that this is the main tourist area of the city. There’re many sidewalk stalls, fun activities and especially sightseeing tour by boats. I also try feeling of standing on the boat and watching Can Tho bridge, listen to Southern amateur music. The boat is quite large and many floors, leave the wharf at 7:30 pm, if you late, there are still small boats willing take you arriving the sightseeing boat because it only goes around and very slowly. The boat runs over the fishing village, getting around the pedestrian bridge, Ninh Kieu Park, and Can Tho ancient market. Singers are the girls who singing folk songs. They pretty young and beautiful, so gentle and cute. I heard they sang a bit but did not any understand of this art-form, mainly take the time watching the river scene. People say that all the girls here often arrive Saigon to make money, there no more stay here much, but it does not seem right because here I still see quite a lot of cute girls, at least there are two singer girls on this boat.

The sightseeing tour on the river ends, I wander around a while and then return, walking along the Ninh Kieu wharf to enjoy fresh airs. Sometimes, I stopped at a stall looks attractive, sell a lot of very strange and delicious dishes, which is banh cong, banh xeo (rice pancake), oc nuong tieu… I like to enjoy street foods, which made by stallholders. They prepared foods, put in a cart and go around for sale. I got impressed by images of a banh xeo vendor woman and her little daughter. This little girl very diligent, helping her mother sell and serves customers until the midnight. Well, how can I describe this! I like Can Tho such, gentle, true and full of simplicity from this Mekong Delta tour.
