 I with a girl have a trip to Hoi An ancient town to photograph. This girl often goes to Hoi An, and she loves this ancient town a lot. She told me a lot about Hoi An, especially the Vietnamese sandwich (banh mi). In Vietnam, this kind of sandwich available everywhere, but she insists that the best world’s sandwich only in Hoi An! Oh, this dish is my favorite food, I began to get curious about it.

The sandwich bakery named Madam Khanh located on a small road, far away from the ancient town. However, this bakery still a familiar destination where attracted a lot of tourists. It’s the best Vietnamese sandwich in the world! It’s comments of many customers after enjoying sandwichs which prepared by a hostess own hands.

The Banh Mi Queen, that’s the name that TripAdvisor has named this small sandwich shop. This place gets a lot of praise from Western tourists. The sandwich owner is Mrs. Loc, an 81-year-old woman. At first, I’m so quite surprised by her name, I thought her name is Khanh. My friend said that the name of the bakery’s signboard is the name of her husband_Loc. That sounded weird!

It’s a real pity if you traveling Hoi An without trying this famous Vietnamese sandwich! Over the last 30 years, the ingredients of it processed according to family formula has created the characteristic and attractive taste. I sure you couldn’t ignore when trying it.

I’m surprised the area of the sandwich bakery. It’s quite small, located in a small road far away from the tourist spot. This bakery only wide less than a dozen square meters includes few of small tables and a glass cabinet stores the banh mi’s components.

When we arrived there, Mrs. Loc making the sandwich and chatting with a foreign tourist in a language … hard to understand! When the British guy just left, she turned to see me, laughed and explaining: “Did you understand what I said? Actually, I don’t know English much, only a bit to speak about how much the price is”. As long as they say “good, good!”, I thought they liked my bread, I’m happy about that.

According to Mrs. Loc, previously, she sold chè (sweetened porridge), then she sold sandwiches for almost 30 years. On opening day, her bakery did not own signboard. There’s a Western man ate banh mi and donated her a signboard with the title as her husband name_Khanh.

Mrs. Loc said, before opening the bakery, she went to some famous Vietnamese sandwich bakeries in Hoi An to tested its fillings flavors. Then she learned about and created the recipe of sandwich fillings with the own characteristic flavor.

Every day, to prepare the ingredients for a selling day, she needs of her daughter help on the previous night and the early next morning. In particular, she prepared raw materials very carefully, includes the egg, barbecue, meat, sausage, pâté, vegetables, chili, pepper and sauces … All are marinated, processed in own recipes and must always be of best quality.

When my friend asks Mrs. Khanh: “Why don’t you move your bakery to the ancient town to get more customers?”. Mrs. Loc smile:” I’m already old, only selling bánh mì for fun. Moreover, I would like to have a quiet place for customers. They can sit and enjoying the sandwich, not affected by the noise, and bustling outside … “.

Perhaps the most distinctive position of the bakery is the glass cabinet. There are hundreds of notes in many languages gumming up on the cabinet from the tourists. It’s the commendations, feelings, comments about the best delicious Vietnamese sandwich they’ve ever eaten. The majority of these comments all came from the foreign guests.

According to Mrs. Loc, the glass cabinet was donated by a British tourist in early 2014. Since then, many visitors came here, after enjoying Vietnamese sandwich, they wrote their feeling and glued to this board. On the board showed many languages of tourists from many countries such as England, France, Japan, China, Korea, India, Laos, Cambodia, Spain …
Having just finished a Vietnamese sandwich, James, an American tourist, said, “This is my second time arrived Hoi An and enjoying this special sandwich. The bread here is very tasty, crispy crust and the fillings are not too fat, very different from the sandwiches I have ever eaten in other places. I have told that banh mi is my favorite dish. Whenever I’m traveling Hoi An, I often eat a sandwich from Mrs. Loc and take sidewalk coffee. Not only in Hoi An, the Vietnamese sandwich in everywhere all own its delicious taste So, this street food deserves to rate in the top of 10 Must-Eat Vietnam Street Foods.
