Vietnam street foods are very diversified and tasty. If you traveling in Vietnam, surely you must try street foods. Besides exploring the beautiful places, you should also experience the famous street foods of Vietnam. Explore the life and culture, enjoying street food is an interesting experience too, right?

Recently, CNN’s travel website has voted 10 famous Vietnam street foods that any backpacker who takes travel in Vietnam must eat at least once. Now, let’s see what CNN chose?

1. Phở (Noodle Soup)

According to CNN, the first dish you should try is phở (Noodle Soup) – Cannot skip this dish when talking about Vietnamese street foods. This is a quite popular food of Vietnam cuisine from former times.

Walking on the streets of Vietnam, you easily see the familiar images of pho stalls on the sidewalk. At first, you’ll think this dish is quite simple, only broth, noodles strands. On the surface of pho bowl is the slices of beef or chopped chicken meats, a bit herbs.

Phở is a delicious dish at cheap prices and almost available everywhere. However, I prefer to eat pho in Hanoi, where famous for this dish.

2. Bún Chả (vermicelli and grilled chopped meat)

After phở, bún chả is the second dish on the list of famous Vietnam street food which voted by CNN. Beside phở is considered the most famous dish in Vietnam and can be found anywhere, bún chả is quite a popular dish in North Vietnam.

The pieces of sliced pork are marinated in spice, then baked on fire. The sizzling pork and its tasty flavor surely will make you won’t forget this dish.

Bún chả includes grilled pork, noodle, herbs, and a sauce. In many places, you can eat bun cha with crab spring rolls. Are you are still hesitant about it? Remember that President Obama and famous chef Bourdain used to eat this great dish.

Personally, I really don’t like this dish. I prefer bún thịt nướng (grilled pork with noodles), a specialty dish of Central Vietnam regional. The taste of bún thịt nướng is similar to bún chả, I will refer you to it in later posts.

3. Xôi (Sticky rice)

Xôi also appeared on the list of tasty Vietnam street foods. It’s also considered as a main dish.

A small packet of xôi often come with other ingredients such as shredded chicken, roasted meat or fried eggs, sprinkled with little-fried onions, peanuts. This dish is a perfect choice for you if intend to wandering all day.

4. Bánh Xèo

Bánh xèo is a kind of pancake of Vietnamese with crispy surfaces, and the mixture of shrimp, meat, bean sprouts and little herbs within. To enjoy this dish, you just cut a corner of the pancake and roll along with girdle-cake, vegetables and pickles then dip this roll into the sweet and sour sauce. If eaten with a lot of vegetables, you can eat this dish a lot without fed up.

On rainy days, my mom often made bánh xèo for us ate. In the cold weather, it’s great to eat each slice of bánh xèo is so hot and crispy! If you also experience that feeling, surely will never forget the taste of this delicious dish.

5. Gỏi Cuốn (Spring Roll)

Another type of roll foods also appears on this list, which is the gỏi cuốn (spring roll). This is a perfect choice to change your taste if you fed up with greasy dishes. A roll includes meat and vegetables wrapped neatly, dipping in sauce and enjoy! This dish is much easier to eat and digest.

7. Cao Lầu

Cao Lau also appears on the list of 10 best Vietnam street foods. This famous dish derived from Hoi An, it’s made of noodles, but it is not like pho nor bun bo, it rather looks like udon noodles of Japanese. Its ingredient includes pork and the crispy wonton of Chinese but broths and vegetable all originated from Hoi An, Vietnam. This dish originated from the Chinese people who lived in Hoi An since the 17th century. Basically, the form of this dish is similar to mi Quang.

8. Bánh Mì ( Vietnamese Sandwich )

The French who brought bread to Vietnam but the Vietnamese turned it into a specialty dish – Bánh mì Việt Nam (Vietnamese Sandwich). Vietnamese banh mi is so popular that you can easily find any stall with a Vietnamese bread signboard in any place around the world.

Vietnamese banh mi’s ingredients are quite varied, but the most common is the traditional ingredients. Believe me, it’s worth a try!

On the list of 10 best Vietnam street foods, this is a dish that I eat it almost every day! Once you have taste banh mi, sure you will addict it, like me!

9. Bột Chiên (Fried Rice Flour Cakes)

If you want to enjoy Vietnam street foods fully, do not forget the famous dish named bột chiên in Saigon.

Personally, I suppose this dish is a great breakfast, especially on a morning after a night of drinking, but unfortunately, it’s very hard to find it in the morning. The bột chiên stalls usually only open in the afternoon. This dish is a popular snack with students. It’s a very simple, not much flavor but very tasty. Rice flour is made into a cake, it’s cubed, then fried up in a pan with egg. Then sprinkled spring onion on its surface. It’s usually eaten with shredded green papaya, the small chunks of egg covered rice cake can be dipped in soy sauce.

10. Cafe Trứng (Egg Coffee)

The last dish on the list, egg coffee, the dish received many compliments from CNN. Even though coffee is a drink, but in Hanoi, you can absolutely see it as a dessert.

To enjoy the egg coffee, you should slowly stir bobbed froth of whipped egg with the coffee below. Sweet and fat tasty of egg and milk combined with a bitterness of coffee created the mesmerizing scent.

This is a dish that all backpackers tell each other must try it once when traveling in Hanoi. The egg whites are beats until getting smooth, then pours it on the surface of the coffee cup. Although this dessert only appears in small alleys in Hanoi, however, those egg coffee shops are always crowded with people.

Traveling and enjoying specialty dishes is the memorable experiences. Those who like to travel all have such thinking, including me.
